VAISAKHI FESTIVAL

Hello...... A big thankyou to all those who read yesterday`s entry and left the kind comments.  Jake is fine today, nothing wrong with him at all. It`s only me who is still a bit upset by it all, but then I do tend to overeact a times.  Today we went to Black Park instead, had a lovely time there in the sunshine,  Jake swam, ran around with many of the other dogs that were there without the slightest hint of trouble.  As I said, thanks again! :-)

I took these photos today of the annual celebration parade of Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year festival and commemerating 1699, the year that Sikhism was born as a collective faith.  It is always a very colourful event with orange being the Sikh`s colour.  The parade is conducted very well, with the local Sikh community paying for the extra police who manage the procession, they also have their own marshalls and street cleaners.  After the procession has passed you would never know it had happened as the streets are cleaner after they have gone than before!

The photo in the bottom left corner, are the holy men who walk barefoot carrying the ceremonial swords representing the five K`s, or Khalsa. The 5 K`s are:

~  Kesh (uncut hair)

~  Kara ( a steel bracelet)

~  Kanga (a wooden comb)

~  Kaccha (cotton underwear)

~  Kirpan (sword)

The parade was much smaller than it has been in the past.  Usually there are quite a few more floats and many more people, but this one went by really quickly.  Maybe a lot of people didn`t come to Slough this year and opted instead to go to another parade elsewhere. I`ve not bothered taking photos of this before so I decided to take them from an upstairs window, all the while darting back and forth to the computer reading emails and journals. I`ll sign off now but I hope you`ve all had a smashing weekend, Bye for now and enjoy the rest of your day. :-)

I'm glad they had what looks like a nice day for it there - it's been cold, dark, and raining all day here! Must have been a wonderfully colourful event too. Great pictures.

I'm glad Jake's ok!!  Don't worry about him too much Sandra he's probably more strong than you take him for :-)  Ooooo the pics are very colourful aren't they?  My ex-line manager was a sikh, it was really interesting to find out about his culture and that he had an arranged marriage.

Great photo's of the Sikh new year festival, so colourful, and bright and sunny too!  Like the photo of the litter pickers cleaning up after the floats, that's unusual isn't it!!  Looks like fun!
