I just have to share with you this poem which although is not my own, is just the same very touching and has a comforting air about it. I discovered it in Dogs Today magazine on the obiturary page and it goes like this.
The Big Dog Angel
High up in the courts of heaven today
A big dog angel waits
With the other angels she will not play
But she sits alone at the gates.
"I know my mistress will come", says she,
"And when she comes she will call for me".
She sees the spirits that pass her by
As they hasten towards the throne
and she watches them with a wistful eye
As she sits by the gates alone
"But I know that if I wait patiently
Someday my mistress will come" says she
And her mistress far on the earth below
As she sits in her easy chair
Forgets and sometimes whistles low
For the dog who is not there.
And the big dog angel pricks up her ears
And dreams that her mistress voice she hears.
And I know when at length her
mistress waits
Outside in the cold and dark
For the hands of death to open the gates
That lead to the courts of gold.
The big dog angel`s eager bark
Will comfort her soul in the dark.
