Autumn Cabbages

"In the garden, Autumn is, indeed the crowning glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and care and toil. And at no season, safe perhaps in Daffodil time, do we get such colour effects as from August to November."

Rose G. Kingsley, The Autumn Garden

Hello Everyone,

I hope you`ve all had  an uneventful day, this being Friday 13th...that is of course if you are the slightest bit superstitious like I am. Luckily up till now nothing remotely bad has happened but I`m still being extra careful and I will continue to do so until I go to bed tonight, though knowing me I`ll probable fall out of it...lol!  There was a real chill in the air this morning and I had to drive really carefully because of patchy fog on the way to work.  I drive through country lanes to get to work and the fog was getting thicker all the time, not of course that it slowed down some people, far from it, some of them for reasons best known to them drove even faster that usual or so it seemed...madness!

"There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots
may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on
the feelings, as now in October."
                                                       Nathaniel Hawthorne

I`ve got my orchid at last,  it`s nearly finished flowering for this year but it should be lovely again by next year.  I found the ceramic pot that I had for it is too small so I`ll just have to buy a new one...well, they are half price at the moment...lol!  I`ve been really busy at work today, with my new found confidence brimming I`ve been answering the phone, signing for deliveries, running around the centre trying to find things for customers ( and I mean running!), carrying goods to cars, giving advice on plants and shop goods......and you `ll like this, dead heading ornamental cabbages.  I can`t for the life of me see what`s attractive about them but each to their own taste, they certainly won`t find a place in my garden.  The only cabbages I have I eat...lol!  I was quite relieved to finish work today because my back is a little sore, but all in all I love my job and I look forward to work each day, something I never did in the 19 years I worked for Royal Mail.  I feel useful and appreciated and that is very important in a workplace as far as I`m concerned.

"Spring comes with flowers, autumn with the moon, summer with the breeze,
winter with snow.  When idle concerns don't fill your thoughts,
that's your best season."
-   Wu-Men

Tomorrow evening, Jim and I are going to a wedding reception.  A friend of ours`son is getting married in the afternoon and it was nice to be invited. I don`t think we`ll know any of the other guests but I`m sure we`ll have a good time regardless.  The only thing is I`ll miss Strictly Come Dancing but I`ll have to tape it for later and....I`ve just remembered I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning at 11.15..at least I`ll be able to get up and hour or so later than in the week.  Anyway, my friends, heres` hoping you all have a nice, relaxing weekend. Bye Bye andTake care. :o)

Next thing you know, you'll be the president of that company!  Good job!  I'm so glad you are adjusting quickly and learning everything so well.  I had no doubts about that.  : )  Ornamental cabbage is very big here.  People use it for a garden border plant.  I'm not fond of it either but you certainly see it a lot.  Enjoy the weekend!
Hugs,  Kathy

Sounds like you have really settled in at the garden center.  That's good and I'm happy you're enjoying it so much. I think some ornamental cabbages are actually pretty (I know what you said about them).  I especially like them mixed in with Chrysanthemums in a planter.  Linda in sunny & warm  Washington

Sandra, what lovely little verses. I am so glad you enjoy your job. I used to work part time for a small firm before I retired. I enjoyed the work and did things that were not part of my job because I wanted to improve the system and make life easier for myself and the staff. I was well looked after. 12 days holiday a year. Paid bank holidays, sick pay and a bonus at christmas. I retired aged 68 and the govenor was sorry to loose me. Regards Dan.

Oh Sandra, what a day you had - dead heading cabbages!  I imagine that each day of yours now will really be unique and fun in its own way!  I raise orchids so if you ever want any info or help, let me know.  I have three of them in our window at the end of our bath.  They love it in there!  You may get a second blooming within a year.  My oncidium is blooming now for the second time.  I was really, really surprised!

Thank you for the lovely poem.  You just can't beat autumn!

We were lucky here, we had no fog. I am not a lover of ornamental cabbages either.  We did try them in the garden one year and they bolted and looked awful.  I prefer pansies.
My orchid needs repotting, I know they are supposed to fill the pot but the roots of my one are creeping across the table!!! I know you have to use special compost but I am at a loss to know what size pot to put it in and whether plastic or clay.

Dear Sandra, I am really pleased you are enjoying the job.  It must be nice looking forward to each day.  I have been at my job for 29 years (eeek) and can't honestly say I enjoy going every day but I do like the girls I work with and that helps.  I worked for someone who has now left for almost 25 years and we were like an old married couple.  I do miss him now he has gone.  Hope you enjoyed the wedding.  Terry

Hope you had a good evening on Saturday. I'm pleased to read I'm not the only person who loathes those stupid cabbages. Take care.
