BITS OF LOCAL HISTORY

Brrrr.....   It has turned cold today.  White frost all over when I got up this morning.  I felt like going straight back to bed apart from the fact that there is a starving dog who needs me to feed him NOW !

Anyway I don`t have anything special lined up to post, well I do, but I can`t just post legends and myths, ghost stories etc.  Though I do have a lot of material to use.  I might look further a field and try to find something really frightening though I don`t want to be blamed for my journal readers sleepless nights !  I didn`t realise until I started seriously looking just how much there is in the way of interest  around these parts.  We have Cliveden just down the road, they very place that our Minister of War, John Profumo met Christine Keeler, Mandy Rice-Davies and Stephen Ward in the 1960s. and had to resign over the scandal.  The film ` Scandal` was based on the the whole affair.

We have a lot of historical interest with Windsor Castle only being a couple of miles in the other direction.  I have been to the castle myself so many times in my life since I was very tiny and even now at 52 I still find the place amazing.  Though as we have to pay to get in since the fire there I don`t go inside anymore.  But the little streets ouitside the castle are very old and have little coffee shops, restaurants and bars with walls that lean and roofs that slope very precariously.  In fact it`s amazing that some of them are still standing.  There is much legend surrounding them also.  The tourists who come here from all over the world are always fascinated by Windsor and its beautiful castle.  It is also the Queen`s favourite home and she is present on many a weekend.  Her presence is signified by the flying of the Royal Standard which we can see on the way to Windsor from the relief road that we use from Slough to Windsor, it is a habit for us to look across to the left just to check that the Standard is flying as we drive past.

Nearer to home we have a holy well that goes back to the 13th century. In the reign of Queen Anne a commemeration stone was laid in her honour but it was later broken up and made into a horse trough. The spring was known for its benificial effect on weak eyes.  The spring is in a bad state of neglect now but it`s water is still running clear despite this.

I am off now to take Jake for a two hour hike and when I get back I won`t be allowed near the computer till tomorrow as Jim is decorating this room and I have been banished till he is finished which may be later today I don`t know. So have a great day everyone and take care !

This is uncanny, we have old wells in the village. Bretch Well was a stopping place for those who came to 'take the waters'. It is like many other locally fed springs and wells around here and contains high iron deposits. in fact there is a spring just outside the village that runs red. And I live at Holywell!

Yes, Windsor is fascinating, we have always loved it but boy do those little shops know how to charge lol!!! Well, with it being a tourist area they would. Fascinating insight into other places near where you live.  Hope you are not too exhausted from your walk. xxx
