Chills and Winter Breaks

Hello everyone,

I wasn`t going to do an entry today but changed my mind. It`s so cold today, don`t you think? At least you should be if you live in southern England...I know Sara is cold because I just read her journal entry so I know I`m not quite alone. It`s been so mild of late that the cold wind really hit the spot today. I was lucky to be working inside today out of the cold wind, not that it will be very much warmer once we start getting frosts seeing as though we have no heating in the shop.  It`ll be thermal underwear again for me this winter...lol!

One of the comments on my entry of yesterday suggested that I`m an expert gardener...I`m not, just a better one because of my time at the garden centre. I`m quite lucky as I have the type of memory that can soak up lots of small details; like what plant is what and what type of compost is for what and what chemicals to use and when. At the time of my interview just one year ago I was told that there was so much I could learn and how right that was. I am so grateful that I got this job because I`ve learnt so much and it is helping me at home as well as in work. I`ve been interested in gardening for a lot of years but I wasn`t especially green-fingered. I find it amazing that with some things my memory is terrible but with others it`s as sharp as a tack. I suppose it`s a bit like an old computer, one minute it works and the next it doesn`t...lol!

I bought some winter pansies today for a hanging basket that I`m going to put outside the front door. I also bought some basket liner, some winter fleece, some fence paint, bell cloches to protect my geraniums and a tin of sour cherry drops...well I like to keep some sweeties in the car. Staff discount is a wonderful thing you know! Tomorrow Jim is going to mow the lawn and do some weeding and I`m going to do a bit more tidying in readiness for winter. I know it`s only autumn but I must prepare. I might even paint the front fence if it stays fine, it needs doing and it`s not a huge job and it`ll be one thing less for Jim to do. I have a list for him but he doesn`t know yet...lol!

I`ll have to ask Jim to reset the timer on the central heating. At the moment I have to use it manually which is a bit of a pain. Danny shorted the electric once when he was here and it caused the settings on the time to clear.....Jim reset it and it was fine...then Danny shorted it again with his iron..sigh.

Forgot to mention....we are definitely going to Prague in November. Today I had my days off confirmed and Jim has already found a hotel and and flights. All he has to do is book it and we will have our long weekend. I am really looking forward to it even though it will be very cold. I know the old city of Prague is exceptionally beautiful and you can be sure my trusty camera will be coming with me....I can`t wait!

I`ll say goodbye now; I don`t have any journals left to read so I`ll go and play some Bookworm until I sign off at 9pm.  Have a nice evening and take care. :o)

Brrr... just starting to warm up a little here now, with the heating on :o)
I wish that I knew more about gardening, mine could be so much nicer I'm sure.
November isn't too far away now is it, hope you and Jim have a lovely long weekend away in Prague, though you'll have to take your thermals along with you ;o)

I do look forward to your entries Sandra.  Yes, minds do tend to get a bit like old computers but I like to think that, while not as fast as the new version, an old computer can always be relied on if push comes to shove - lol  Night night

It's still hot in our part of the world. Been in the 90's for a couple of weeks now with no rain. It's really dry here now. Hope you get your heat sorted out soon. Helen

It's been a very cold strong windy day here too Sandra. Not that I have been out at all LOL!! Afraid I have  still been toasting my toes under the duvet from Jet Lag still LOL!! I think the more you learn about gardening the more interesting it becomes Sandra. When I was younger I must have read every book in the local library on plants.I agree fully with you on the memory thingy LOL!!Love winter pansies.I don't think I shall bother with my tubs and baskets over the winter, theres  too much wind and being open to the elements of the sea.Going out in that cold puts me off tending to them haaa. Not too good for my arthritis Brrrr nowadays. How lovely another holiday in Prague.I am sure you will enjoy.I know for a fact you will enjoy shopping for it before you go LOL!! Take Care God Bless Kath

Woooo!  Prague!  What a wonderful adventure that is going to be.  I bet you will have a wonderful time with your husband.  I cannot wait to see your pictures and hear your stories!

I love pansies, too.  The husband of my best friend grows the most beautiful pansies you have ever seen!  My favorites are his purple with the bright yellow centers.  When they bloom again, I will send you pictures.

Have a lovely day.
Hugs, Kathy

We could use some cooler temps here in NY. It is so much not like Autumn in NY usually is. Despite how you came about Gardening, I think you do a wonderful job. Congrats on being able to go to Prague in November. Sounds like it will be a wonderful adventure indeed. (Hugs) Indigo

Hi Sandra,

I love seeing the stars and that moon in your entry. The weather has been wonderful in Georgia I am enjoying it. Fall has certainly arrived to Georgia. I know pretty soon the cold weather will be coming to Georgia but at the moment we are all enjoying the Fall weather.

My mom and I recently purchased a Venus Fly Trap at Home Depot and I put it on our deck today. I think its a very unusual plant but I like it. I am not much of a gardener I just like buying little plants and flowers.

I sure wish I was going with you to Prague I have always wanted to go there. I have seen it on the Travel Channel in my neck of the woods and it looks amazing. I do hope you enjoy your trip. You will have to let us know how it was when you get back. I can't wait to read all about it.

What books are you reading ?? I just received some in the mail from my friend Rebecca Anne and I just started reading one of them. Thanks again for sharing your life with us.

Take care

You used to talk about your garden before you started to work at the garden centre ,so we knew you'd be good at it ,and thats why your brain accepts the facts its because you enjoy it so ,pleased you got your holiday break booked sounds great ..love Jan xx

Hi Sandra, I expect it's because you're interested in gardening that you remember a lot of the information you've learnt. Things are always easier to remember if we enjoy the subject. Prague is really beautiful, Andy and I went there a few years ago. It was 110F when we went in August but I'm sure it'll be chillier when you go. I'll look forward to seeing your pics, there's a beautiful old church there near the old town square and the astronomical clock is beautiful too, enjoy it! Jeannette xx

It's getting cooler here too.  But everything is still growing including the grass and the weeds in my flower beds.   Prague ?  Wow, that sounds interesting.  Can't wait to see the pictures.  I painted the door to my shed the other day.  It looked terrible and I couldn't stand looking at it like that any longer.  Have a good weekend,  Linda in Washington state

Hi Sandra.  Still in the eighties here.  Hardly even any coolness in the night either.  LOL  Nor much rain...still in our drought situation.  Under by about 15 inches.  Bad situation.

Prague sounds lovely.  Yes, I will enjoy coming back to see pics of that.

Have a good weekend and keep warm...I'll blow some air over from the US.  LOL

The temps have finally let the 80's here...going into the 70's.  I am looking forward to the chilly temps myself.  My sister-in-law, just came back from a business trip to Prague.  She said it was lovely...but she was busy and couldn't enjoy the sites as she wanted to do.  Hope you have a lovely weekend, Sandra...
Hugs and love,
Joyce

Chilly already. We are still in the 80s here in TX. I am ready for cool weather. The Regional Fair was on all last week. The kids took the 3 oldest granddaughters and they had SO much fun. I am so amazed that the 4 & 5 yr olds rode every ride with gusto . Prague! How wonderful. I cannot wait to see your pictures.
Stay warm!!
